What is the Spero Mentoring Program?

The Spero Mentor Program connects compassionate individuals with clients to build meaningful friendships and provide encouragement. Mentors commit to meeting with their mentee on a weekly or bi-weekly basis for at least one hour per session. To create a lasting and positive impact, we ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months. This program is designed to foster growth, support, and connection in the lives of those we serve.

What does a mentor do in the Spero Mentor Program?

Mentors dedicate their time to building meaningful friendships and providing encouragement to their mentees. They engage in activities such as tutoring, teaching skills or instruments, going to church, or spending time together.

What activities can I do as a mentor?

Some possible activities include:

  • Tutoring and homework help
  • Teaching skills like cooking, sewing, or other hobbies
  • Offering instrument or singing lessons
  • Participating in art projects or crafts
  • Spending quality time on campus
  • Taking small trips or outings (with prior approval)

The activities will depend on your skills, interests, and the needs of the mentee.

How much time is required to be a mentor?

Mentors are asked to meet with their mentee on a weekly or bi-weekly basis for at least one hour per session. To ensure a lasting impact, the minimum commitment is 6 months.

Are there any age or eligibility requirements to become a mentor?

Yes, mentors must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Complete a background check (child welfare & criminal)
  • Undergo fingerprinting through the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services
    Can I transport my mentee to activities or trips?

    Yes, but mentors must meet transportation clearance requirements. This includes having a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance on file with the agency, and passing a driving record check.

    Where do mentoring sessions take place?

    Mentoring sessions can take place on campus, in approved public spaces, or at pre-approved locations for small trips. The location will depend on the planned activity and the preferences of both the mentor and mentee.
